Mixing Contest: Dierks Bentley

Win Big with Sonarworks
This month's Zelab is sponsored by Sonarworks.
- First prize is a copy of the Sonarworks Premium Edition
- Second prize is a copy of the Sonarworks Studio Edition
- Third prize is a copy of the Sonarworks Headphone Edition
The Song:
In our recent full length tutorial: “F. Reid Shippen Mixing Dierks Bentley”, we watched as Reid recalled the session for Dierks Bentley’s “Drunk On A Plane” and his thought process on topics like using the Haas effect and spatial processors like Crystalizer and the Cooper Time Cube to extend guitar elements outside of the speakers, sidechaining background vocal effects to the dry send to avoid masking the dry signal, how he engineered the drum session, creating Ambience using Drum Room Mics and Drum Samples and more, which helped him to cook up an exciting and FUN mix for this smash hit.
Now it’s your turn to sit in F. Reid Shippen’s chair and mix “Drunk On A Plane” from Dierks Bentley for a chance to win one of three prize packages from Sonarworks.
Sonarworks products remove unwanted coloration from studio speakers and headphones, allowing you to have more confidence that what you are hearing come through your speakers will translate to other playback systems outside of your studio.
How To Win:
Mixing is an art form, the winner will be chosen based on the judges' TASTE. There are no absolute rules. Don't be upset if your version of this mix does not make it to the top.
The pureMix team will listen to ALL of the mixes and pick 3 winners.
Here are a couple tangible suggestions to carve your way to be the potential winning mixer:
- Upload your mix before April 30th, 2019
- Make sure you send in the right song (Don't laugh, it happens quite a bit)
- Don't send the mentor's original mix hoping that we won't notice (Don't laugh, it happens quite a bit)
- Make sure the vocal/drums/bass/guitars are not muted in your mix. Especially the lead vocal. (We think the production was quite nice and would love to hear all of it.)
- Don't change the tempo/key/arrangement. This is a MIXING challenge.
- Louder is not better, we level match everything before we listen (You know who you are)
- Consider using the pureMix LUFS Analyzer to help reach a reasonable final level!
Good luck!
