Andrew Scheps

Andrew Scheps is a music producer, mixing engineer and record label owner based in the United Kingdom. He has received Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album for his work on Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium, Album Of The Year for Adele's 21, and also Best Reggae Album for Ziggy Marley's Fly Rasta.

Andrew started as a musician, but found that what he enjoyed most was working behind the scenes. This led him to study recording at the University of Miami. After graduating, he spent some time working for Synclavier, and then on the road with Stevie Wonder (as a keyboard tech) and Michael Jackson (mixing live sound). But he found his home in the studio, and he honed his craft working for producers such as Rob Cavallo, Don Was and Rick Rubin.

Andrew collaborated with Waves in order to create his own line of plug-ins which include the Scheps 73 EQ and the Scheps Parallel Particles.

Andrew is one of the best known mixing engineers in the world, well-known for his Rear Bus mixing techniques that he developed working on his 64 input Neve 8068 console and his love for distortion of any kind. If you are watching pureMix videos you will see that he managed to carry his analog sound signature over to a fully portable digital rig. These days, Andrew mixes completely In The Box as it allows him much greater flexibility and the ability to work on several project simultaneously.

Thank you! You confirmed what I learned in the last few years of mixing on a laptop while traveling. I use 7506, too, but I prefer to use the sonar works software to tame the highs a bit. I do use the DT-770s without correction, though. And both translate well everywhere. I once used to have the "too much reverb" problems, but now I have found a good measure. And I listen to the speakers in my room, but all sound fine! Anyway, it's comforting to hear that we all have the same concerns.

I love it!!! Thank you, thank you. I had this argument with so many people!! If you don't have a *very* well tuned listening environment, get a great pair of cans!

So nice to hear a different sound about working with headphones! I started it when I was traveling a lot and there were no speakers around. I've grown to love it and your ears are going to love it. I even think I got better in mixing due to working with them. Thanks Andrew!

Independent of rig, acoustics and more things, music subjectivity is a thing. Objectivity exists, but the major thing is singing about subjectivity. If you know your equipment and compensate things about knowledge you're fine to go, one friend of mine won a contest using headphones only. Thanks to the people doing great content. Have a nice time.

Finally, we have a down-to-earth "coffee table" conversation on mixing with headphones. The most interesting statement in this discussion was Andrew's comment on how compression, not reverb, is often the culprit contributing to a mix's "wetness".

Thank you for travelling down this road! It’s very encouraging to hear you guys speak about the perspectives of headphones, speakers and rooms. Most of us watching aren’t mixing in great sounding rooms. Fab do you or your team have any experience with Sonarworks? I’ve been using it for a short time and I’m still on the fence with it. Thanks!

In my mind, it doesn't matter what you mix on, as long as you know them. Any new speaker/headphone takes time to get use to. Just relax and listen to your favorite music until you know them. I do have a little trouble with reverb when mixing on headphones and I was fixing it on speakers. Learned something new today, Thanks.

It was really reassuring to hear that my 7506 are Andrew's favourites, although I use a "flattening" EQ compensation on them and he's not. Being French, the funny thing about this video is that I understand Andrew perfectly while I have a hard time understanding Fab... :-D

I often leave the room, walk around, get out of the sweet spot, and *definitely* use headphones. It's nearly impossible to stay in the sweet spot when you're working on a big desk anyway. In the end, it's all about capturing and enhancing the "feel" of the music. Whatever works.

I just simply love every word from Andrew. Sounds exactly how I think and just says things I believe in too. Andrew goes against all the stupid nonsense that spreads online. “You can’t make good mixes only itb” “You can’t mix on headphones” “If you mix on headphones, make sure to spend at least £1k or more” Andrew Scheps: Hold me beer I really hope I can meet Andrew one day. Luckily I moved to the UK and built a small studio. Andrew pop in for a beer if you’re coming to the Lake District. Beer on me

Excellent points..To me it has to sound great from a mono shit speaker to the Bose car stereo, average stereo in a room and naturally ear buds that everyone can afford. Learned a lot, thanks.
